Advocate for and empower

students with special needs

Seattle University’s Special Education Master of Education degree program takes a social justice mindset to teacher training. Our nationally recognized and accredited program prepares special education teachers to both empower students with disabilities and become advocates of positive change in their classrooms, schools and districts.

Designed for working teachers, this 2-year master’s degree program gives you the flexibility of both online and classroom courses that are held in the late afternoon, evenings and over the summer. We’ll also work with you to customize your degree to your interests and learning style.

The program’s comprehensive coursework leads to a K-12 endorsement in special education and a Master of Education degree. You’ll graduate with:

  • Deep foundational knowledge of special education theory, law and research.

  • Mastery of a wide range of instructional practices, approaches, methods, curriculum and assessment tools.

  • Hands-on experience in a broad array of real-world special education classrooms and contexts.

Fill out the form and watch the video, "Every Child Has Special Needs," featuring graduate student Alex Levinson. You’ll learn why he chose SeattleU, and why school administrators seek to hire our graduates.

HANDS-ON PRACTICUM AND SERVICE PROJECT

Apply your knowledge in the classroom — in real time. Through practicum work and in your current classroom you’ll practice diagnostic and prescriptive teaching with K-12 students who have learning or behavior challenges. Your practicum will culminate in a capstone service project based on transformative action-based research in Special Education.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Washington State often offers financial support to certified teachers who seek to expand their knowledge and skills by adding endorsements in subject or geographic shortage areas. State retooling money of up to $3,000 may be currently available for high need areas that include Special Education.

CENTER FOR CHANGE IN TRANSITION SERVICES (CCTS)

Special Education graduate students have access to the exceptional on-campus resources of the CCTS — an SU initiative to improve post-school outcomes for students with disabilities across Washington State. The CCTS collects quality data, performs robust research and offers training and technical assistance to Washington State agencies, educational service districts and public schools.
